WHITEHILL WINS GRANT FUNDING!!

Thanks to the efforts of the Chairman over the
last two months of 2007, the society has received
grants from the SMBC local area funds, greenspace
grant scheme and the National Lottery 'Awards for
All' scheme.

This is no mean feat given the amount of time and
effort it took and the paperwork involved as well
as the compilation / research into the content of
the actual submissions, in fact the total a
present stands at aproximately £7,700!!!

All these funds are to be put towards improving
the wildlife area and upgrading the
small 'classroom' building for the local schools
and community groups to use. All this over the
coming months of 2008.

This is an exciting time for the society and the
schemes will be photographed to record what goes
on and record progress throughout the project
duration.

WHITEHILL WINS 'MOST IMPROVED SITE IN BOROUGH' AWARD

The Society has proudly been awarded the accolade
of being voted 'Most improved in Borough' in the
2007 awards scheme run by the local council held
in conjunction with SMAGA (Stockport Metropolitan
Allotment Garden Association).

This is due to the efforts of the committee,
assisted by members of the allotment site
community (too many to mention individually) in
achieving projects such as improved drainage,
water supply roadways and facilities. The
development of the wildlife area with seating and
more ponds and many other things to numerous to
mention.

The overall appearance of the site has
dramatically improved over 2006- 2007 and this
must be working as there is a small but none-
the-less important waiting list for plots!

So on behalf of all the committee - a big THANKYOU.

John G.
Chairman

COMMITTEE NEWS - SEPTEMBER 2007

Well the site is looking very good - a credit to
all those of us who have helped out, from the
youngest to some of our more older members!!!

The water main now offers all a chance to get
fresh water at a reasonable distance from their
plot and the drains appear to have been
successful , given the vast amount of water that
has hit the site in the last few months.

Wildlife - this area is immense, thanks to the
secretary (Mike) we have had some media exposure
in the Stockport Times and Express / Advertiser on
the new wildlife friendly area.

In fact it has gone so well that we have a
resident family of ducks....the proud mother
wandering around the site with 10 ducklings..now
as big as herself! a success in anyones books!

Also the council is impressed with the site and so
are the committee - there are now limited
plots available, with plots now being halved to
ensure that manageable areas are given to busy
folk.

We have an on / off waiting list - which means if
you are reading this and were thinking of a plot -
do not worry - get in touch and we can put you on
the list or even get you straight onto a plot (you
nver know) - tenancies do change for a variety of
reasons so you may get one quicker than you think.

Onwards and upwards....

Plot Rents 2007 - 2008

The following amounts are the rent for plots from
November 2007 - November 2008:

£33 for a full plot (£20 Leisure pass)
£17 for half plot
£41 for a Chicken plot (£24 Leisure pass)

These are subject to a sliding scale of rent,
reducing as the year goes on reflecting your start
date until next collection in November.

Due to the fact that there are now a limited
number available at any one time, the plots can be
discussed on a telephone call / e-mail or site
visit - please use the contacts section for
relevant details and to set up a meeting.

Hurry Plots going - if you want one be quick!!!

It has now got to the point on site that there are
very few plots left , at time of posting very few
indeed one full and one half plot - with people
showing interest all the time, especially so as
allotments are getting more and more publicity
nationally in the press.

The plots that are left do require work
to bring them up to scatch - but thats all in the
nature of allotmenting anyway. Think of them as a
blank (well green at any rate) canvas for you to
make your mark on.

All the plots needed digging over and clearing at
some time or other - and , as all newcomers are
told 'do little and often' and you will not get
fed up, put off and you can accomplish amazing
effects as well as achieving a lot of satisfaction.

So, if a bit of hard work for the result of eating
fresh fruit and veg - that you grew is your thing
and you have the time and commitment then get in
touch. We will be glad to show you around
and introduce you to the other plotholders and try
to help you get started on what is a very
rewarding pastime.

Regards

The Committee

Water Main Extension & Improvements - March 2007

Well the digger was finally organised, the weather
stayed good and the committee roused itself for
what was a good full weekends work in adding three
more taps around the site to ease the burden on
our members of having to walk quite a distance to
get water in summer.

In fact due to the help we received from the
general membership over the weekend in laying the
ducts and pipe, the digger (many thanks to Denis)
was able to put in two ponds on the wildlife area
and a short run of drainage to one of the wetter
plots.

Pictures of the mains being put in are available
on the pictures section of the site.

This should be the last big project on site for a
few years now - drains , water and wildlife area
have been addressed and , apart from a little more
work , wil be finished by summer !!!!

Once again thanks go to those resilient band of
volunteers that attended site and gave it their
all - thankyou.
